Pain is an uncomfortable sensation, sometimes seemingly calling from deep inside the body, alerting the person to damage to tissues, bones, or organs. It's the signal that something is wrong. At the same time, this message prompts the individual to act to prevent more damage from occurring. People seeking medical care often do so because of pain and the need for treatment. Whether it be a sickle cell crisis, appendicitis, trauma, fractures, migraines, chest pain, or abdominal pain, the pain is the impetus that drives the need for relief.

This course explores chronic pain management, from NSAIDs to opioids and everything in between. It addresses the opioid crisis, including fentanyl and xylazine, and the new CDC clinical practice guideline for prescribing opioids for pain. Upon completion of this activity, the learner will possess evidence-based knowledge of pain symptom management using a wide variety of approaches, including opioid and nonopioid medications, interventional therapies, restorative therapies, behavioral health approaches, cannabis, and complementary and integrative health techniques. 

This activity satisfies the two hour pain symptom management requirement of the Michigan Board of Nursing.
