Each section of this course satisfies the Florida one-hour administration/supervision requirement. Together, Sections A and B satisfy the Florida requirement to earn 25 contact hours in administration/supervision (course must include a test) to upgrade a license from Medical Technologist to Supervisor.

For those certified by ASCP, this course supplies 25 contact hours in laboratory management.

This course presents a clinical laboratory approach to management: the goal is to address everyday real challenges that confront the manager. Topics include those that staff technologists or department supervisors frequently are too busy to deal with, yet the chief pathologist and hospital administrator have expectations that someone in the laboratory is taking care of – that someone, by default, becomes the laboratory manager. This course is designed to help equip the manager with the tools with which to meet those challenges.

The reading material consists of selected chapters from Henry’s Clinical Diagnosis and Management by Laboratory Methods, 23rd edition.

This course is divided into two sections: Section A is worth 12 contact hours; Section B is worth 13 contact hours.

Topics include:

Section A (chapters 1, 4-7, 9): General Concepts and Administrative Issues; Analysis: Principles of Instrumentation; Analysis: Clinical Laboratory Automation; Point-of-care Testing and Physician Office Laboratories; Postanalysis—Medical Decision Making; Laboratory Statistics.

Section B (chapters 10, 12, 13): Quality Control; Financial Management; Biological, Chemical, and Nuclear Terrorism: Role of the Laboratory.
